Squared Bottle Vase

I like making bottles, and I like squaring off forms, so this vase is an amalgamation of these both. They are quite challenging to throw as you have to collar in the clay considerably, and then wait until the clay is just perfect to be flattened. If you go too soon things can get messy, too late and the clay wants to crack on you.

Once squared off I dipped it in a clay slip and wiped through it to create the decoration. he flattened sides make nice big panels for decorating. Each side has a different floral motif. I hope it finds a good home and many flowers grace it!

It was wood fired and salt glazed in Lara O’Keefe’s kiln, Pittsboro, N.C. You can see the wood ash on one side of the vase. It was facing the firebox as shown in the first picture.
