Ah, teabowls. Or chawan. Or yunomi. The details of the differences in these forms can be found here: http://www.e-yakimono.net/html/yunomi-jt.html
Drinking tea from a teabowl is a special experience. I don't want to pontificate on the subject too much and do not feel I have the authority to do so, having not yet been to Japan and experienced the tea culture there, but I can say that its a special experience. It makes you consider the taste of the tea more, to meditate on it. I dream of teabowls.
One Japanese potter writes:
"Yunomi can be used by anyone, regardless of age, and it is also the last item removed from the dining table. It is there at our sides for many hours during the day and brings us comfort."
