Spring is nearly upon us. This lizard told me so.
Handled jugs, glazed inside only... I didn’t want to decorate them too much as the plain salt glaze and wood ash is enough. Something about this form just wants to be left pretty plain. But I did incise some of them with various ideas, such as “MOONSHINE” and “HAMISH, 2019.” That one on the end got a lot of invisible as it was my final pot here. It kind of reminds me of the feeling of leaving school and everyone signing your yearbook. Thanks to Will (@willbaskinpottery) for taking this pic. Will is the newest Hewitt apprentice, (filling my holey shoes).
This is the last pot I’ll throw for the 100th firing. Quite likely the last pot I’ll throw at the Hewitt Pottery too, as this is my last firing here. It’s a 31/2 lb jug (or cider jar) depending where you come from. It felt really good to throw these this afternoon and think how far my skills have come over the past four years. I still made some terribly shaped ones but more than a few good ones too. This one has a bit too much neck for my liking and could be a bit fatter, but we’ll see how it looks after it gets a fat handle tomorrow. It will head into the kiln sometime early next week. We start loading on Friday but it usually takes us a full week to get all the pots set in there.
