Shigaraki sake bottle

$110.00
Sold Out

I made this jar in Shigaraki, Japan during my residency there in 2019.

Shigaraki is famous for its clay and particularly the feldspar chunks in it. I was on a mission to find some whilst I was there. I managed to get my hands on some of the gold but not much so blended it with some clay that I bought and some that I dug too.

The blend came out fabulously which was a relief because I only had one shot at an anagama firing. I fired with a Chinese potter and help from the technicians for 108 hours. There was a hurricane during the firing which proved interesting. Wood was extremely expensive so I processed a whole cherry tree for the firing but it had not had long enough to season properly. I was drying the cherry atop the kiln during this hellacious storm. When the wood started smoking I knew it was ready to go in.

I was inspired by all the sake bottles around town (you see them everywhere). So the ones I made drew from these examples. I was particularly interested to see x’s inscribed on the shoulder of many pots.

Dimensions: Approximately ” tall x ” wide

*

I use USPS and UPS and send tracking information after shipping each order.

I ship internationally; it’s no problem, but it may require extra postage. It’s hard to estimate as it changes from country to country. For international orders, I will contact you if there is a discrepancy between what you pay and the actual cost.

Thanks! I promise I don’t email often. I should email more but frankly it just isn’t as fun as making pots or drinking tea.

Thank you!
