Shigaraki vase
I made this jar in Shigaraki, Japan during my residency there in 2019.
Shigaraki is famous for its clay and particularly the feldspar chunks in it. I was on a mission to find some whilst I was there. In searching around I found that there are several different clays in Shigaraki. One clay that the locals call “mountain clay” is used to make tanuki statues. These are cute racoon creatures that folks buy for good luck.
I was allowed to dig some of this mountain tanuki clay on site and I included it in one of my blends. This pot was made with a clay that definitely had some tanuki in it. I can tell by the tone of the finished pot. This one was in a very active part of the kiln and got a nice deposit of wood ash. I used mostly cherry wood with some pine to fire and it was a challenge… in the midst of a hurricane. 4 days and nights firing through driving rain. A firing to remember!
I was inspired by the large shigaraki jars around town (they are truly magnificent). So the vases I made drew from these examples.
